At the heart of Volcano Saga, Women and Smoke, California, and HEX lies a shared exploration of the moving image as a vessel for magic and ritual: each work summons mythic energies and ancestral echoes, whether through Jonas’s weaving of an Icelandic saga and volcanic landscape into a performative myth, Chicago’s smoke-shrouded feminist gatherings that transform ephemeral matter into collective ritual, or Katrín Helga and Sóley’s invocation of witchcraft, femininity, and the uncanny supernatural in contemporary Icelandic cinema. What binds them is not narrative continuity but an insistence on image as incantation—moving pictures that do not merely represent but conjure worlds, staging the screen itself as a site of transformation, enchantment, and communal imagination.

Joan Jonas (b. 1936, USA) is a pioneer of performance and video art whose experimental works have influenced generations of artists. She represented the U.S. at the 2015 Venice Biennale and has exhibited at major institutions including Tate Modern, MoMA, and the Whitney Museum.

Judy Chicago (b. 1939, USA) is a foundational figure in feminist art. Known for iconic works like The Dinner Party, her practice spans painting, installation, and performance. Women and Smoke remains one of her most powerful works to date.

Katrín Helga Andrésdóttir (b. 1987, IS) is an artist and musician working across film, performance, music, and theatre. Her film HEX received multiple awards across the Nordic festival circuit. She is also one half of the duo Ultraflex and previously a member of Daughters of Reykjavík.
